The Madetoja Foundation
The Madetoja Foundation was established in 1997 on funds from a bequest by composer Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947). It is administered by the Society of Finnish Composers. The purpose of the Foundation is to promote the works of Leevi Madetoja and other Finnish musical creators.
The Foundation is an independent entity, but its Board of Directors is appointed by the General Meeting of the Society of Finnish Composers. The Society also supports the Foundation with the collective copyright royalties it receives from Kopiosto; these are used for instance for funding the recording grants.
The Madetoja Foundation awards grants for three purposes:
- Leevi Madetoja projects: for example publications, academic research, a concert or stage production, a recording or any other project focusing on the career and works of Madetoja. For publishing Leevi Madetoja’s compositions, please contact the Madetoja Fund.
- Commissioning grants: for commissioning new works of concert music from professional composers of art music. A commissioning grant must be applied for by a performer or other commissioner, e.g. a musician, an ensemble, a choir or a festival organiser.
- Recording grants: for non-commercial recordings of art music.
The Madetoja Foundation grant round is open yearly on 1.– 31. January.
