Unidentified and unrealized projects
The works in the following list have sometimes been associated with Leevi Madetoja. More detailed information can be found in the latest list of works: Poroila, Heikki: Pohjalainen rapsodia. Leevi Madetojan temaattis-bibliografinen teosluettelo (Honkakirja 2024, in Finnish.)
- Ad astra. An unrealized project for a stage work to a text by Larin-Kyösti.
- Bartholomew-laulut. An assumption, probably based on incorrect interpretation, about unknown male choir songs, commissioned by Marshall Bartholomew (in the United States).
- Gaudeamus igitur. A congratulatory song, known only from Madetoja’s diary entry on October 29, 1943.
- Intermezzo. A work based on a mention in Madetoja’s letter, which may be a reference to a completed work.
- Kaipaus. An entry in Erkki Salmenhaara’s notes and in Teosto’s composition database, for which no other information has been found.
- Kallaveden laulu. An interpretation based on Madetoja’s letter of April 24, 1914, which may refer to the song Kuu kalpea, op. 13, no. 4.
- Kolme koraalia. Three chorales. Entry in Madetoja’s list of works under opus 84.
- Kolme laulua koulunuorisolle Amerikaan. Three songs for schoolchildren in America. Entry in Madetoja’s list of works at opus 86.
- Kruunumorsian. An assumption about music for a play with the same name, probably based on Elli Tompuri’s mistake.
- Käy unonen kätkyehen. An assumption probably based on Heikki Klemetti’s faulty memory.
- Laulu opettaja Poutiaisen tyttärelle. A song for the daughter of teacher Poutiainen. An assumption based on second-hand memory that the song was composed as a graduation gift.
- Luonterin laulu. An entry in Erkki Salmenhaara’s notes and in Teosto’s composition database, for which no other information has been found.
- Les masques de la vie. Unrealized project in 1929 for a stage work based on a text by Poul Knudsen.
- Olviretki Schleusingenissa. In October 1946, Madetoja pondered the fate of this stage work of his. It was probably a false memory.
- Requiem. Madetoja seriously planned to compose a requiem in the 1940s. In one of Madetoja’s own lists of works, the work is listed as opus 85. No compositional documents have been found.
- Rêverie (Nocturne). A composition competition work by the pseudonym “Septentrion”, the manuscript of which has survived among Madetoja’s works. However, it is most likely a work by another Finnish composer.
- Sahatyömiesten laulu. In Madetoja’s handwritten catalogue of works from around 1919, opus 20, in addition to the well-known songs, also includes the song of the Sawmillers, for which no material documents have been found. The name has been shortened, so there is no certainty about its exact form.
- Simo Hurtta. Madetoja considered composing this play by Eino Leino as an opera, but ended up with Artturi Järviluoma’s Ostrobothnians.
- Suomalainen Parsifal. Towards the end of his career, Madetoja planned an opera for which V. A. Koskenniemi would have written the text, but nothing concrete seems to have ever been created based on the idea.
- Suomen Työväen Musiikkiliiton tilaus. Madetoja’s diary contains the entry for 12 November 1946: “Composition commissioned by the Finnish Workers’ Music Union!” No further information has been found about such a commission.
- Violin Concerto. Madetoja’s diary contains an entry for December 10, 1946: “Kaj Kajanus called – – I am to write a violin concerto.” No documents have been found even about the start of this project.
